Organization
The Imperial Jurai Armed Forces (IJAF) is comprised of multiple branches of armed service, focused on preferred areas of tactical operations. Planets are not won or lost based solely on the operations of ground forces -- armored cavalry which can trace their roots back to ancient Terra. Still, these ground forces are the key to success in long term conquest, and the IJAF employs hundreds of regiments of armored cavalry, better known to most as “BattleMechs”. Only three of these regiments have risen above the crop to become known as the best, most elite crack organizations within the IJAF.
These three regiments are intended to be the front line assault groups; their very presence on a planet can turn the tide of battle in favor of Juraian military forces. They are: the 1st Imperial Guards, the 9th Cavalry, and the 5-212nd Heavy Assault. Each one has a proud history & reputation to uphold. All three regiments have seen more combat duty in the last 15 years than all the rest of IJAF ground forces combined.
1st Imperial Guards
Part of the Jurai Defense Core, the 1st Guards were not always considered to be a viable tactical assault force. Early in Juraian history, when 'Mechs were in short supply and skilled pilots were the most valuable commodity, Warlord leadership of Jurai found it inefficient to use hardened combat veterans to staff a mostly-decorative unit. The 1st Imperial Guards were attached to the Imperial Leadership, primarily utilized for formal parade, House formal affairs, and guardianship of the Royal Family. Therefore, this regiment was largely comprised of retired volunteer pilots, injured duty reserve, and those recruits deemed too “disaster prone” to be trusted with front line duties.
This all changed during the major conflicts that erupted during and after the struggle for Herotitus. Pressed for available troop expenditures, the 1st Guards were forced into front line service to support Juraian leadership when they found themselves deployed in assault actions. The Guards, at that point, were such a motley collection of young & old talent that most did not believe they'd be able to stand as an effective military unit.
Once a Juraian, always a Juraian. The 1st Guards proved themselves time and time again in tricky situations, holding planetary assault lines, reinforcing more “respected” sister regiments, and staging outright guerrilla warfare on several worlds. After a decade of front line service, the 1st Imperial Guards earned a reputation as crack force, focused on victory. Outside their 'Mechs, the Guards are still a motley collection of grandfathers, cripples, and young “black sheep”. Suited up, however, they are one of the most disciplined fighting groups in the IJAF. Wearing twin red streaks of “blood” down the cockpits of flat-black Battlemechs, they are considered some of the finest front line soldiers to be found.
1st Imperial Guards Lances
Securis Carnificis Lance
Securis Carnificis
"Axe of the Executioner"
Securis Carnificis is a lance of duty and honor. Their loyalty to the royal family runs deep. It is for this reason they were given the task of executioners within House Jurai. Whenever an enemy MechWarrior was sentenced to death, they were afforded one last chance to save themselves: a one on one duel with a member of the Securis Carnificis Lance. If the prisoner won, they were acquitted - if they lost, they were killed. Under the command of the original founder, Illusion Tokomi, Securis Carnificis never lost a duel. After Illusion’s rise in the ranks of House Jurai, Tai-sa Nexx Nisshoko was given the honor of the holding the Axe. To this day, Securis Carnificis is a force to be reckoned with.
Breakwater Bastards Lance
The Breakwater Bastards first encountered House Jurai as a small mercenary unit employed to protect a prominent aquatic produce facility during the civil war on the planet Spencer. Little did they know, the venerable House Jurai were in the verge of launching a full-scale invasion of the planet, naturally taking full advantage of the planets internal politicking and civil chaos to swiftly force the planet under their martial rule. Following a drawn-out, month long battle, the facility they were tasked with protecting had been left practically useless, the Breakwater Bastards made the offer to fight alongside Jurai and cut both sides losses. With the government they were protecting in ruins, who was going to pay them, even if they did fend off the entirity of Jurai? Better with Jurai, than dead. Better pay this way, too.
9th Cavalry
“Anywhere, anytime.” This the unofficial credo of the elite 9th Cav, sole survivors of one of Jurai's most horrific Pyrrhic victories. Although always considered to be a skilled outfit, 9th Cav were dropped along most regiments from the 3rd Army over Fire Bear controlled territory -– 12 regimental task forces hit fortified positions, but due to poor intelligence and light air cover, 11 of the regiments were decimated in pitched point blank combat. The 9th Cav survived the melee with relatively light losses, due in large part to the unit's mobility, adaptability and skill. Since then, the other 11 Cavalry regiment designations have been retired – leaving the 9th Cav as the flagship unit of the 3rd Army.
In the years that followed, the 9th Cav became the go-to regiment for dangerous high altitude drops, operations centered behind enemy lines, and precision strike raids. Preferring speed & mobility over heavy armor & weapon configurations, the 9th Cav moves light and minimize their dependency on ammunition based arms. Many of their pilots are qualified mechanics as well, allowing them the freedom of battlefield retrofits to overcome damage in extended campaigns.
Now a seasoned strike team, the unit has changed commanders several times over the years, refusing outside promotions, favoring only commanders who have served in lower echelons of the 9th Cav. In remembrance of the fallen 3rd Army, the 9th Cav wear a black all-weather cloth of heavy tyvek draped over the right shoulder of their 'Mechs, bearing the 3rd Army logo. With this cloth hanging over the standard Jurai paint scheme, the 9th Cav 'Mechs strike a vivid image, making them the most recognizable unit in the IJAF.
9th Cavalry Lances
Hateful Oni Lance
The Hateful Oni lance was born after a tragic planetary assault that went wrong and left a company of battlemech almost destroyed except for four survivors who regrouped in dangerous swampland without support. The Hateful Oni, as the superstitious enemy began calling them, used unconventional guerrilla style tactics to harass the enemy for three months. Near starvation, with mechs almost falling apart, the Hateful Oni demonstrated some of the most unorthodox, and what many might say - dishonourable - tactics to lead a behind the lines push when Jurai returned to retake the planet from the tyrannical despot who controlled it. The Hateful Oni Lance lost half its force, but succeeded in raiding the command compound of the enemy, executing their leader without consent from Jurai High Command. The lance has had a tainted and shady reputation because of this, but no one has ever questioned their effectiveness, resourcefulness, and drive to succeed at all costs. Asmudius Heng and Marj Kagato-Armitage are the only survivors from the founding mission.
5-212th Heavy Assault
True to their name, Jurai's oldest surviving regimental task force, the 5-212 are one of the galaxy's most feared armed units. Comprised of only seasoned commanders and elite pilots, the 5-212 comprise the spearhead for the the core of Juraian shock troops. Holding the IJAF's highest kill-to-loss ratio by a landslide, the unit is made up of hardened warriors, psychopaths, and berzerkers. The very presence of 5-212 on the battlefield has lead to planetary surrenders, and in one case an entire Clan's surrender. Shortly before the Battle of Herotitus, Clan Black Lotus surrendered holdings in entirety upon communication to their Khan that the 5-212 was approaching his command installation.
This effect works in reverse as well. During the Battle of Drumsfide, disillusioned and starving Jurai regiments from the 4th and 5th armies, enbroiled in bitter trench warfare for months, were inspired into leading a successful assault on the capitol city upon hearing news of the 5-212's reinforcement -- before the regiment even landed planetside.
Preferring the largest, most vicious BattleMech designs in existence, 5-212 is sometimes nicknamed “The Hammer” among other IJAF units. One of the rare groups to forgo standard Juraian black & purple scheme, 5-212 has always preferred camouflage matching their battlefield conditions. The regiment's willingness to accept pilots with “irregular” psychological profiles has benefited their tenacity and bolstered their notoriety. However, it has also led to the unit's grim tradition of “wearing” the mangled bodies of dead enemy pilots, crucified as a Jurai emblem on the 'Mechs. This grizzly and odious display has been discouraged by IJAF command for years, however it is unlikely to ever change given the fearsome reputation of the 5-212.
